Down the Dumoine River

Group of friends in life jackets on a dock.

Hello!

I’m Sarah, and as I look back on our Dumoine River journey, I’m filled with a sense of awe and wonder. Alongside my co-guides Fiona and Deniz, we took a fantastic group of girls – Julianne, Grethen, Nicole, Violet, Camille, Grace, and Kasia – on an adventure that tested their limits and sparked lifelong friendships.

Our trip started smaller, where we paddled across vast lakes before reaching the river. We traveled upstream, fighting the current and portaging around some intense rapids sections. But the hard work paid off when we reached Lac Dumoine and began our downstream journey. This year’s high water levels added an extra layer of excitement, with thrilling rapids and lining downstream. Typically we aren’t able to run as many of the rapids due to water levels, but this year it felt like we were flying down the river. And let’s not forget the polar bear swims – a Camp Temagami tradition!

Some of my favorite moments were paddling beneath the breathtaking Bald Eagle Cliffs, a stunning 500ft wall of rock that marks the river’s end. We also enjoyed serene mornings paddling through misty sections, surrounded by nature’s beauty.

But what made this trip truly special was the girls themselves. Their resilience, teamwork, and laughter made every day a triumph. I felt honored to be a part of their journey, and I’m already looking forward to next year’s adventures with this amazing group.

Thanks for reading, and I’ll see you on the water!

Best,

Sarah
