Base Camp

Camp Temagami is located on a 20-acre island at the top of the Southwest Arm of Lake Temagami in Ontario, Canada. The Temagami region has been an important canoe-tripping centre for over 100 years and lies 450 km north of Toronto and 100 km north of North Bay.

Base camp is rustic but fully serviced, comfortable and intimate. Camp Temagami campers’ cabins line both sides of our very private bay. Most of the island is forested in spruce, pine, maple, and birch. Our dining hall was built in 1930 and has a warmth and charm which makes you feel personally connected to the past 85 years of canoeing adventures. It is the heart of the camp and the energy level is electric. Entertainment comes in the form of singsongs, hilarious skits put on by our guides, storytelling, and theme meals. This is the spirit that makes the Camp Temagami experience unique and memorable.

Within our modern and exceptionally well-stocked trip shed, all trip outfitting happens and everyone exchanges and shares tripping tips and knowledge. However, one cannot walk far without encountering a canoe rack housing our beautiful wood-canvas canoes. They have been built especially for the camp by Headwaters Canoes, which is operated by one of our owners, Hugh Stewart. The canoes: Muskrats, Rangers, Forts, Garrys, Krugers and Cronjes – all historically relevant terms for different canoe models traditionally built by the original Chestnut Canoe Company.

Our sports field is utilized for many activities; campfires, group games, evening programs and spontaneous sessions of various team sports. The centrally located camp commons is a natural gathering place for campers of all ages when they are not playing games on the sports field, swimming in the bay, creating an arts and crafts masterpiece, aiming on the target range, sailing, or catching a football off the jump tower.
